Fascinating past of a little known subject
If you're parallel with the least bit interested in the history of Southern California, or gangsters, or gambling, or ships, then I assuredly recommend this book. The author has clearly done a LOT of analyse, and the book is chock full of photos and graphics. It's a extremely handsome volume. My only quibble with it (and why I only gave it 4 stars) is that the author chose to standardize the book by the story of each different ship, rather than of as an overall history. Thus, the impact of the events involving one send on another only become clear after you've look over 2/3 of the book, because with each transport, you have to go back in time to its origin and follow it from one end to the other its demise. The first half of the book deals with Tony Cornero, certainly the most compelling character and the most honorable of these "entrepreneurs." His exploits and dealings with the law are utter entertaining. However, because of the book's structure, it's not entire why the authorities are so hellbent on going after him; this...

My Inventor Fred Grange was a partner with my real godfather Tony Cornero. They were knotty with The Rex and the Montmartre in Cuba where I was born. Ernest Marquez done in decades writing this highly accurate and warm-heartedly written account of the Gambling ships off Santa Monica.
